The other day, as I walked into work, a thought that ran through my mind was, “What can I do today to be a blessing to others?”
The thought took me back for a second because I don’t normally have that thought as I’m walking into work, sad to say. It’s something I should be working on. I want to love as Jesus loves, putting others before myself.
I have always wondered when someone brings up Matt. 22:39, how easy is it to truly love our neighbor as ourself. It’s not usually our first instinct.
We live in a me-focused society. What can I do to make myself feel better? What could I be doing better in my life? While we obviously have to take care of ourselves to keep on living, we don’t always have to be the center of our own attention.
I’m the first to admit I struggle with this. When someone mentions something pertaining to a job or something they need help with, my mind sometimes, depending on what it is, races. If my gut reaction, is “Ugh, I don’t want to do that!” or “I’m not staying to help past 9pm!”, do I truly have a servant’s heart? Am I actually putting other’s needs before my own?
Nope.
I feel ashamed to say it. I’m human. We all are. We all make mistakes. We give into the flesh, even when we try so desparately not to.
My hope and stay during selfish times is Jesus. He is the One that I can run to and ask not only for His forgiveness, but for His help with me getting my eyes off of myself onto other’s.
Have you thought lately “What can I do to be a blessing to someone else?”
God can call each of us to be a blessing in a variety of ways. Some may be grand gestures while others may be a quick smile and word of encouragement.
We never know what someone else is going through. But God knows. He knows exactly what brand of encouragement is needed for Abby and a completely different brand will be needed for Mark.
We may never know the name of someone that God calls us to be a blessing to. The name doesn’t matter as much as the person.
We are each a beautiful creation created by the most amazing person that ever walked this earth and yet instead of praising Him or looking to the needs of others, we may be caught up in the latest lingo, recipes, paint color, etc.
While God has called some to know paint colors like the back of their hand, His calling for you and me will be different. We may not know exactly what that looks like right now. Patiently day by day, God is working in each of our lives, bringing the exact people He intended to cross our paths.
So, what is God calling you to today?
Helping an elderly lady load her groceries into her car?
Watching a friend’s kids, so the dear friend can get some much needed rest?
This list could go on, but the idea is the same.
When you feel God prodding your heart, follow where He leads.
You never know where He will take you.
Matt. 22:39
“And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
John 13:34
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”
Very important that we listen to and follow those nudges from God. We can be a blessing in many ways. 🙂
